Best Time to Visit Cancun: Weather, Rain, Hurricanes & Seaweed by Month

The best time to visit Cancun for dry weather is usually December through April, while May and early summer can deliver lower prices with more heat, humidity, and seaweed risk. There is no single perfect month for every traveler.

This guide separates four issues that are often mixed together: rainfall, hurricane season, sargassum, and resort pricing. Choose the tradeoff that matters most instead of expecting one forecast to predict an entire trip.

At a glance

  • Best overall weather: Late January through March
  • Best value shoulder season: Late April to early June, accepting heat and seaweed risk
  • Rainiest period: Typically September and October
  • Atlantic hurricane season: June 1 through November 30
  • Highest sargassum risk: Often spring through summer, but daily conditions vary

Cancun weather month by month

December through February

These are the most comfortable months for many visitors: warm days, lower humidity, and less rain. Evenings can feel breezy, and holiday weeks carry premium rates.

March and April

March is sunny and popular. April grows hotter while often remaining relatively dry. Check school and spring-break calendars if a quiet pool matters.

May through August

Expect hotter, more humid conditions and a rising chance of sargassum. Short showers are common, yet complete washouts are not automatic.

September through November

September and October are the most weather-sensitive months. November can improve quickly, but tropical activity remains possible until the official season ends.

Cancun rainy season: what the forecast really means

The Cancun rainy season is generally discussed as May through October, but rain is not evenly distributed. A daily thunderstorm icon may mean a short tropical downpour, while a stalled system can create several gray days.

Build a flexible plan: schedule the beach early in the day, keep one indoor or spa option, and avoid treating an hour-by-hour forecast ten days out as certain. Travel insurance matters more when the itinerary includes nonrefundable tours.

Cancun hurricane season and actual risk

The official Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 through November 30, with climatological activity typically peaking in late summer and early fall. A season date is not a prediction that Cancun will be hit during your week.

For late-summer and fall trips, choose changeable flights, understand the resort’s storm policy, and monitor the National Hurricane Center’s official climatology and advisories rather than social-media forecasts.

Cancun seaweed season and beach strategy

Sargassum tends to become more visible from spring into summer, but arrival is highly local. Two neighboring beaches can look different on the same morning. Resorts may clean frequently without controlling what comes ashore next.

If clear water is the trip’s top priority, favor winter, check recent guest photos, and consider a resort with more than one beach orientation. Our Hyatt Ziva Cancun review explains why its cove and open beach give guests two areas to inspect.

Our month-by-month booking recommendation

Choose February or early March for the simplest weather bet; late April or May for a price-weather compromise; and September or October only when flexibility and savings matter more than beach certainty. November is often the transitional sweet spot, but verify storm and seaweed conditions close to departure.
