Cancun Packing List: 35 All-Inclusive Essentials & What to Skip

This Cancun packing list is built for an all-inclusive resort, where the room, restaurants, pool, beach, air conditioning, and evening dress expectations create very different needs in the same day.

The goal is not to pack more. It is to avoid overpriced resort replacements while leaving room for wet swimsuits, sunscreen, and a simple dinner outfit.

At a glance

  • Most forgotten: Reef-conscious sunscreen, waterproof phone pouch, and small bills
  • Most overpacked: Shoes and formal dinner outfits
  • Rainy season add-on: Compact rain shell and extra quick-dry clothing
  • Family add-on: Water shoes, rash guards, familiar snacks, and medicine
  • Carry-on priority: One swimsuit, medication, documents, and a change of clothes

Cancun packing list: 35 essentials

  • Documents: passport, insurance details, transfer confirmation, hotel confirmation, backup payment card.
  • Sun: two sunscreens, SPF lip balm, sunglasses, wide-brim hat, rash guard.
  • Beach: two swimsuits, cover-up, water shoes, waterproof pouch, reusable bottle.
  • Clothes: quick-dry tops, light bottoms, underwear, sleepwear, one light layer for air conditioning.
  • Dinner: one smart-casual outfit, closed-toe or neat shoes if the resort requires them.
  • Health: prescriptions, pain reliever, stomach medicine, antihistamine, bandages, oral rehydration packets.
  • Tech: chargers, power bank, headphones, and offline copies of confirmations.
  • Small conveniences: laundry bag, stain stick, zip bags, clips for wet clothing, and small bills for optional tips.

What belongs in the carry-on

Checked bags can arrive late, and rooms may not be ready when the flight lands. Put passports, prescriptions, electronics, one swimsuit, sandals, sunscreen that meets carry-on rules, and one change of clothes in the personal item or carry-on.

Keep the transfer company’s meeting instructions offline. The airport arrivals hall is not the moment to search email on weak service while transportation sellers compete for attention.

Clothing for restaurants and resort dress codes

Most resort days need only swimwear, a cover-up, sandals, and sun protection. Evening restaurants may prohibit wet clothing, sleeveless athletic shirts, or beach flip-flops. One pair of neat shoes and two mix-and-match outfits are usually enough for a four-night stay.

Check the exact restaurant policy before departure. Adults-only tasting restaurants can be stricter than the buffet, and rules may differ by property.

Rainy season and hurricane season additions

From late spring through fall, add a compact rain shell, waterproof phone protection, and another quick-dry outfit. A travel umbrella is less useful in strong coastal wind than a simple shell.

Packing for Cancun with kids

Our Finest Playa Mujeres review explains why water shoes, stroller-friendly packing, and an indoor midday plan helped our family.

  • Long-sleeve rash guard and secure sun hat
  • Water shoes for hot pool decks and splash areas
  • Familiar medicine with dosing tool
  • One familiar snack for travel delays
  • Small quiet activity for restaurants and transfers
  • Approved flotation equipment only when appropriate; never use it as a supervision substitute

What not to pack

  • Expensive jewelry that will stay in the room safe
  • More than three pairs of shoes for a short resort stay
  • Full-size beach towels when the resort provides them
  • Prohibited food, especially meat-containing baby foods without checking customs rules
  • Every excursion item “just in case” before the excursion is actually booked

Final 24-hour check

Confirm passports, flight status, transfer instructions, hotel room type, weather, and any dinner dress code. Move medication and one swim outfit into the carry-on. Download the hotel app and confirmations before leaving home.

Review our Cancun safety guide and keep emergency contacts offline. A compact bag with the right essentials is more useful than a large suitcase filled with duplicate resort clothes.

Frequently asked questions

How many swimsuits should I pack for Cancun?

Two is enough for most travelers: one to wear while the other dries. Add a third only for a longer trip or frequent water activities.

Do I need dress clothes at a Cancun all-inclusive?

Bring at least one smart-casual outfit and neat shoes. Check the property’s restaurant dress code because rules vary.

Should I bring cash to an all-inclusive resort?

A small amount in low denominations is useful for optional tips and small purchases. Use the room safe and avoid carrying the entire trip budget.

Can I bring sunscreen in my carry-on?

Yes, subject to current security liquid limits unless a specific medical or destination rule applies. Larger bottles belong in checked luggage.
